Rituals: Giving Your Routine Meaning

I've hit that stage in life when I just wake up in the mornings, unfortunately early. I don't think twice about what happens next. Bathroom. Coffee. My chair. Bible. News. A kiss from my wife. I just do it, every day, almost without thinking.
Some say it's my routine. But that routine is filled with rituals. Coffee lets me know the day has started. Reading the Bible sets my spiritual compass. I want to be educated, informed, and growing, so I read. It's more than a default routine. It's starting the day with intention. These rituals give are filled with purpose.
Rituals are purpose-full habits, repeated actions with meaning behind them. They're built on the norms your family already runs on, the ones we talked about last week, and because they're repeated so often, they're what actually reflect and reinforce your values, whether you meant them to or not. Just as my routine directs my day, your family's daily routines and rituals shape your household in a significant way.
🧠 What the Research Shows
A landmark review of 50 years of family research found the routines that mattered most weren't the vacations or the milestones. They were the plain ones: dinnertime, bedtime, chores, the stuff that happens most days. Those were the ones linked to healthier kids and stronger marriages.
Dad, how does your day start? What happens the moment you walk in the door after work? Which routines run through your day without you even noticing? Look closer and you'll find they're already expressing something, your habits carry your values whether you're paying attention to it or not.
Routines give your day structure.
Rituals give your day intention.
