Make Your Bed

If you’ve spent much time around leadership circles, you’ve probably heard of Admiral William McRaven’s bestselling book, Make Your Bed. His premise is simple: if you want to change the world, start by making your bed. Completing one small task at the beginning of the day creates a sense of accomplishment that builds confidence and momentum for the next challenge.

It’s a powerful lesson.

But here’s a question every father should ask:

Who teaches a child to make the bed? The answer is obvious.

Dad. Mom. A parent.

Long before making the bed becomes a habit, someone has to patiently show a child how to straighten the sheets, pull up the blankets, arrange the pillows, and keep trying until they can do it on their own.

Making a bed has never really been about making a bed.

It’s about teaching responsibility, building competency, and giving a child the confidence that comes from learning to do something for themselves.

🧠 WHAT THE RESEARCH SHOWS

Children don't become confident because they're constantly helped. They become confident because they're trusted with age-appropriate responsibilities, experience success, and discover, "I can do this." A longitudinal study published through the National Institutes of Health found that kids who regularly did chores in kindergarten showed stronger self-competence, social skills, and self-efficacy by third grade — regardless of income or family background.

A dad’s mission is to pass on his values and skills to his children so they are prepared for life. That’s why Dad Academy encourages fathers to intentionally teach both practical life skills and relational skills throughout childhood. Every new skill—from making a bed to balancing a budget—is another opportunity to prepare your children for adulthood.

This week, choose one thing you’ve been doing for your child that they’re ready to do themselves. It might be making the bed, packing a backpack, ordering their own meal, helping with laundry, or making breakfast.

It will probably take more time.

It may not be done perfectly.

But remember:

Your goal isn’t getting the job done. Your goal is preparing your child for life.

One small responsibility today may become the confidence they need to face much bigger responsibilities tomorrow.
