Which Kind of Dad Are You?

There are three ways of being a father, but only one way that actually gets the job done.

The first is biological. You're a father because of biology, nothing more required. The second is material, the provider. You cover the bills, you meet the needs you're aware of. It's honest work, but it can be done from a distance. The third is cultural. This is the dad who's intentionally building something, courage, competence, confidence, into his kids on purpose.

The cultural approach to fatherhood is intentional because it begins with the end goal in mind. But before we can focus on what our goals for our children are, we may want to begin by asking ourselves what our goals for our own lives are. How do you want to be remembered? A man's true success is not defined by his accomplishments, but by the impact his life has had on others, especially his family. The aim of our life is to help others not only become successful, but also to affirm their value and worth. We build this into our daily routines and rituals that make our family feel how much they matter.

🧠 What the Research Shows

The Institute for Family Studies calls it the "activation relationship," the emotional bond that lets a child feel safe enough to take real risks and explore the world. It isn't built through feeding schedules or diaper changes. It's built through engagement, play, attention, showing up on purpose. So ask yourself the harder question. Not "am I providing" or "am I present," but "who am I forming, and what am I building?"

A dad's biggest responsibility isn't in the doing. It's in the becoming, who your kids become because you made the decision to parent on purpose. Don't settle. Be intentional. Parent on Purpose with your personalized Dad Plan at dad.academy/start.
