The Sweet Spot: You Know It When You're In It

Athletes call it being “in the zone,” where preparation and repetition come together so that in the moment, the game seems easy. In music, it’s when melody, harmony, and rhythm come together and connect with a person's soul. In business, it’s price, value, and function that produce sales. No matter the field, where the three elements overlap, we call it "the sweet spot." Your family has one too. And you know it when you’re in it.
A family’s sweet spot is where values, norms, and traditions overlap. Your values build courage. Your norms build competence. Your traditions build confidence. When they work together, you’re not just managing a household. You’re creating a healthy family culture.
Your family’s sweet spot is where your kids experience the best of who you are and begin to define who they are. It’s there that your values are the most visible and your family life is most impactful.
It’s why my family attends a Thanksgiving service every year. Gratitude is one of our family's values, church participation is our norm, and that service is our tradition. It’s as much a part of Thanksgiving as the turkey.
🧠 What the Research Shows
Researchers using the Family Strengths Inventory have studied thousands of families in more than 25 countries. Strong families share six traits: appreciation and affection, commitment to each other, enjoyable time together, effective handling of stress and crisis, spiritual well-being, and positive communication. These are ways that values, norms, and rituals/traditions are put into practice to create a family’s “sweet spot.”
Discovering your family’s sweet spot doesn’t happen by accident. It happens where what you value, what you expect, and what you repeat all come together. It's also where family life is most satisfying and being a father is most fulfilling.
Finding your family's sweet spot begins with identifying your target. Begin to design your family's culture with the Dad Plan™ Starter Guide.
