Fatherhood Fundamentals: The "ABCs"

Heading back to school is a return to the fundamentals: math, English, history. Fathers, too, can use this season to return to the essentials of parenting: the ABCs of fatherhood. A stands for Affection, which should be both bodily and spoken. A hug. A hand resting on a shoulder. Words said aloud: I love you. I’m proud of you. You’re good at something specific, not merely “good job.” To children, these are more than just words; they signal that they are truly seen.
🧠 What the Research Shows
Duke researchers followed infants beginning at eight months old and continued tracking them into adulthood, thirty-four years later. Their findings showed that children who experienced the greatest affection early in life became adults with the lowest levels of anxiety and distress. Other research even indicates that touch may help the brain encode emotional memories and retain them more deeply, not only the feeling of a moment, but the fact that it happened at all. A gentle touch while talking turns conversation into connection.
B is oBservation (yeah, its a stretch, but you'll remember it now). Just as affection tells a child that you are focused on them, the opposite is true as well: they are watching you. Keep in mind that “more is caught than taught.” Every day, in real time, they learn how to move through life by observing you.
C is Conversation, and it is easier than it may sound: talk less, listen more. In the Gospels, people put more than 130 questions to Jesus. He answered only three of them. He asked more than 300 questions of his own. He seldom delivered snap responses. Instead, he asked, then listened. That is active listening: giving full attention, reflecting back what you hear, and asking questions rather than rushing immediately to advice. It is among the most consistently documented ways to strengthen trust between parent and child.
Dads do not need a fresh curriculum. What we need is a return to the basics. Affection: love them out loud. oBservation: Live before them in the way you want them to live. Conversation: Listen more than you speak.
Those are the ABCs of fatherhood. They are not complicated. They do require consistent repetition. Over time, they equip a child for life.
