Every Yes Comes With a No

Every choice you make is actually two choices.
Choices define a family's culture because they say we do this, and we don't do that. The decision to do one thing is also the decision not to do something else.
What we choose, and what we refuse, gets set by a commitment to something higher than convenience. That's not just decision-making. That's where courage gets built, one choice at a time, because character is shaped by what you actually value, not what you say you value.
In Scripture, there's a story of a man who made it clear who he was and what he stood for. Joshua, the successor to Moses, stood in front of the people he'd led his whole life and let them know that every one of them had a choice to make. But Joshua made his own choice plain: as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord. He didn't leave it open for debate.
Every father makes that same kind of choice, whether he says it out loud or not, just by what he does and doesn't do with his time, his money, his attention.
🧠 What the Research Shows
The Harvard Center on the Developing Child compares a child's decision-making system to air traffic control, managing information, weighing options, choosing a direction under pressure. Scientists refer to these capacities as executive function and self-regulation—a set of skills that relies on three types of brain function: working memory, mental flexibility, and self-control. Kids aren't born with that skill. It has to be built, and it gets built by watching someone use it.
Your kids are watching every choice you make, and every choice you don't. What you say yes to is also what you're saying no to.
