They Won't "Just Figure It Out"

Every parent has probably said it at some point: “They’ll figure it out.”

Sometimes they do.

But many of life’s most important lessons aren’t simply discovered—they’re taught.

No one is born knowing how to manage money, resolve conflict, change a tire, prepare a meal, shake someone’s hand, apologize sincerely, or comfort a hurting friend. Someone has to take the time to teach those skills.

Too often we wait until our children need a skill before we realize we’ve never taught it.

The first flat tire isn’t the best time to learn how to change one. The first paycheck isn’t the best time to learn how to budget.The first job interview isn’t the best time to learn how to introduce yourself with confidence.

Preparation almost always comes before performance.

Harvard’s Center on the Developing Child explains that executive function—the ability to plan ahead, solve problems, exercise self-control, and make good decisions—isn’t something children simply outgrow into. These skills develop through intentional instruction, supportive relationships, and repeated opportunities to practice before they’re expected to use them independently.

A dad’s mission is to pass on his values and skills to his children so they are prepared for life. Every new season of childhood is an invitation to prepare them for the season that follows.

This week, ask yourself: What’s next for my child?

Learning to ride a bike.

Changing schools.

Moving to a new home.

Trying a new sport or hobby.

Every new season brings new opportunities to learn and grow.

Don’t assume your child will just figure it out.

Prepare them.

Encourage them.

Walk beside them.

Teach the skill before they need it.
